1 · Your Brain Isn't One Thing — It's Three

Let me tell you something that changed how a lot of my students see themselves: your brain isn't a single machine. It's three different systems, layered on top of each other, that evolved at different times — and they don't always agree on how to handle a problem.

When you understand these three parts, a lot of "why did I do that?" moments suddenly make sense. You'll stop seeing your anger as a character flaw and start seeing it as biology doing exactly what it was built to do.

2 · Part One: The Reptilian Brain (Survival)

The innermost and oldest part of your brain is the reptilian brain (the brainstem). It's the most primitive part, and it's barely changed across millions of years of evolution. We share it with every animal that has a backbone.

Its whole job is keeping you alive: breathing, heart rate, body temperature — the automatic stuff you never have to think about. What it can't do is think, reason, or consider consequences. It just reacts.

Here's the part that matters for anger:

This brain can't tell the difference between a predator and your teenager rolling their eyes. Threat is threat. When you're running on this part of your brain, you're on autopilot — reacting, not choosing.

3 · Part Two: The Emotional Brain & Your Amygdala

The next part of your brain to evolve was the mammalian brain, better known as the limbic system. This is your emotional brain — where your feelings about events actually live.

At the heart of it sit two small, almond-shaped structures called the amygdala (say it: ah-MIG-da-lah). Think of your amygdala as your personal security guards. They're on duty 24/7, constantly scanning your environment and asking one question:

"Is it safe?"

Your amygdala receives information about what's happening around you before your thinking brain does. It's like having security guards who shoot first and ask questions later. Sometimes that's exactly what you need — it's what makes you jump out of the way of a speeding car before you've consciously "decided" anything. But sometimes it's less helpful — like when it has you ready to fight someone over a parking space.

The amygdala also keeps a memory of everything threatening that's ever happened to you, and it judges fast and broad: good/bad, safe/dangerous. It's so quick and so efficient that it gets you reacting before the thinking part of your brain can check whether your reaction even makes sense.

4 · Part Three: The Thinking Brain (Judgment)

The newest part of your brain is the human brain, or neocortex — and the star of it is your prefrontal cortex, located right behind your forehead. This is the part that makes you you instead of just a clever animal. It does your planning, reasoning, problem-solving, and moral thinking. It's the voice that says, "Maybe there's a good reason they did that," or "Let me think about the consequences first."

Here's the simple way to hold it:

If the amygdala handles emotion, the prefrontal cortex handles judgment.

But your thinking brain has one major weakness. When your emotional brain sounds the alarm, it can hijack your thinking brain by flooding it with stress chemicals that make clear thinking much harder. Ever notice how you can't quite remember what you said when you were really angry? That's your emotional brain taking the wheel while your thinking brain is temporarily impaired. You weren't a bad person in that moment — you were a person whose thinking brain had temporarily gone offline.

5 · The 0.2-Second Head Start

When anger hits, your brain runs through a predictable sequence — and it happens faster than conscious thought. This is the single most important idea in the lesson, so let's slow it down:

  1. 0.2 seconds — Threat detected. Your amygdala spots a possible threat and hits the panic button. This happens before you're consciously aware of what you're even reacting to.
  2. 0.5 seconds — Emergency broadcast. The amygdala fires an urgent message to your hypothalamus — think of it as your brain's 911 dispatcher — which sounds the alarm throughout your body.
  3. 1–2 seconds — Chemical flood. Your body releases stress chemicals (mainly adrenaline and cortisol) into your bloodstream to prepare you to fight or flee.
  4. 2–5 seconds — Body mobilizes. Heart rate jumps, breathing quickens, muscles tense, and blood flows away from your thinking brain toward your big muscles.
  5. Ongoing — Thinking impaired. Those same chemicals make it harder to think about consequences, see another person's side, or remember the anger-management skills you're learning right now.
None of this is a choice. Your body does it to you, automatically, based on how your brain read the situation. You can't stop the 0.2-second alarm. But you can learn to recognize it's happening — and that recognition is the doorway to everything else in this program.

6 · Thinking Brain vs. Emotional Brain: Who's Driving?

So we've got two brains that want very different things in the heat of the moment:

There are seven conditions that make it much more likely you'll get stuck operating from the primitive brain. When you're angry and you're also dealing with any of these, your reactions can feel out of control and impulsive:

Worth remembering on a hard day: if you're running on no sleep and an empty stomach, your thinking brain is already at a disadvantage before anyone pushes your buttons.

7 · The Big Question: Bringing Your Thinking Brain Back Online

We want to be operating out of our evolved (thinking) brain when we deal with anger — because the evolved brain isn't interested in punishing the other person. It's interested in using the energy of your anger to help you get what you actually need.

So here's the single most useful tool in this lesson. When anger starts to rise, ask the Big Question:

"What do I need right now to be OK — and to be healthy in the long term?"

That one question does something powerful: it lifts you out of the impulsive primitive brain and hands the wheel back to your thinking brain.

But timing is everything. Primitive-brain reactions are fast and automatic, so you have to ask the Big Question earlybefore your anger climbs too high. Ask it at a 2 or a 3 out of 10, not at a 9. By the time you're in full flood, your thinking brain is already offline, and it's too late to recover in the moment.

8 · The Six-Step Sequence: Putting It All Together

Here's the whole sequence your brain runs, every time, faster than you can think:

  1. Information from your senses arrives at the thalamus.
  2. It's sent to the amygdala (your security guards).
  3. It's also sent to the thinking brain (frontal lobes) — but more slowly.
  4. The amygdala does a quick threat assessment.
  5. If it judges the threat serious, it floods the thinking brain with chemicals and overrides it.
  6. Out comes the emotional response: anger.

And here's the honest truth about that last step. Sometimes anger is helpful for survival — it's the right tool for a real threat. And sometimes there's no real danger at all, and what you've got is simply a hijacked brain reacting to a parking space like it's a predator.

Understanding the science of anger isn't just academic. It helps you catch anger earlier, understand why certain techniques work, and — this part matters — be more compassionate with yourself when you're struggling. Your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do. The goal isn't to fight your biology. It's to learn to work with it.
